RAPID VAC TRUCKS SYDNEY

4 Essential Vac Truck Applications for Stormwater & Public Infrastructure Maintenance in Sydney

Vac trucks support four different stormwater and infrastructure maintenance tasks: cleaning out pits, clearing drains and culverts, digging carefully near roots and services, and removing wet waste. Each is scoped differently, so match what you are seeing on site to the right task before you call.

Sediment is worth dealing with early. NSW EPA lists blocked stormwater drains, flooding and overflows among the consequences of sediment spills. A cleanout removes what has built up. It does not guarantee a system won't flood in heavy rain.

1. Stormwater pit cleaning for councils, facilities and strata

Leaves, silt and sediment collect in stormwater pits over time, and a full pit can cause ponding around the grate after rain. A vac truck lifts out the sediment, debris and water so the pit can be inspected and drain again. Pit and sump cleanouts are covered on the drain cleaning page.

Typical settings include:

  • Council and roadside gully pits
  • Apartment blocks and strata properties
  • Shopping centre and commercial car parks

How often a pit needs cleaning depends on its catchment, the site and any maintenance plan that applies. There is no single schedule. Don't climb into a pit to clear it. Describe it from the surface and send photos.

2. Drain and culvert maintenance

Blocked drains and culverts can back water up onto roads, yards and car parks. Clearing them usually means jetting to loosen the blockage and a vac truck to remove what comes out. Silt, mulch, litter and standing water can all be collected.

Clearing a blockage helps water move again, but it can't fix a collapsed, damaged or undersized pipe. If water keeps backing up after a clean, the line may need a camera inspection or repair by a drainage contractor.

3. Root exposure and non-destructive excavation near sensitive infrastructure

Some maintenance needs digging rather than cleaning, such as exposing tree roots, irrigation lines or services under footpaths, parks and easements. That is non-destructive digging (NDD), and it is planned differently from a cleanout. Get plans and locating done first. BYDA's 5Ps guidance says to pothole only by a method the asset owner permits, and its August 2022 Best Practice Guide warns that hydro vacuum excavation can still damage assets.

For work such as reaching irrigation near a sports field or installing lighting in a plaza, vac trucks can keep the opening small and limit surface damage.

4. Emergency overflow response and wet waste removal

When a pit overflows, or water and sediment collect on a driveway, loading dock or work area, a vac truck can collect it. The Sydney team operates 24/7.

What happens next depends on what the material is. Runoff carrying silt is handled differently from water that may contain oil, chemicals or sewage, so describe the source and any smell, sheen or colour. NSW EPA's Waste Classification Guidelines base classification on the waste's characteristics, and some hazardous waste must be tracked during transport and disposal. The team will confirm whether they can collect it and how it will be handled. See liquid waste removal.

What to send when booking maintenance

  • The location, the number of pits or length of drain, and a site plan if you have one.
  • What you are seeing: ponding, overflow, slow drainage or visible sediment.
  • Photos of each pit or grate, and the lid type and size if known.
  • Truck access, including parking, distance to the pits, car park height limits and access hours.
  • What may be in the water, if known.
  • Any maintenance plan, inspection or reporting requirements for the site.

Call the Sydney team on (02) 5302 6020 24/7 for urgent or scheduled work, or send pit plans, photos and access details through the contact form. The team provides on-site attendance around the clock and can discuss hourly rates and an estimate before the job is booked.
